The Dream
Unfortunately, that is not a farm we currently own, though it was one that we had the opportunity to visit while on our road trip across the United States. That was when the idea for building a communal farm first began to arise.
You see, when you are on the road you live somewhat apart from the rest of society. The definition of living within your means really begins to hit home. While some are not as fond of a simple life, and prefer to be in the hustle and bustle of corporate work, we know there are others who want to just live without those stresses. That was when we started to think about creating a farm.
The Farm, as we envision it, will be a place where people can come and live without having to worry about money. There will be no cost to being a member of the community, aside from the effort each member will contribute to working the soil and living closely with the land. We envision a place where concern for law can be replaced with a concern for one another.
Though living by a law of Love is not for everyone, it will be open to everyone. As the world faces difficult financial times in the future, we hope to be a safe haven where the weary and downtrodden can rest from the struggles of the world.
Future Plans
Our hope would be to procure enough funds to eventually buy land within National Forest in the state of Colorado, though there is a chance that we might find a plot of land in Utah as well. The farm would be entirely organic and would include some of the following elements:
Buildings:
Main Living Quarters: This will include a kitchen, bathroom facilities, living room, and several smaller rooms for occupation by the community members.
Hall: A large building with all-wood floors. This area will serve as a communal location for meals, meetings, and at nights will function as a dance hall. (Abe really loves his dancing)
Sweat Lodge: Picture a Native American style lodge, dug 2-3 feet into the ground with a roof made of bent timber covered in leaves and grasses that are in turn covered in tanned hides. It will serve as a place to sweat it out and have deep intellectual conversations.
Plants/Animals:
The garden will include an array of vegetables and legumes, along with flowers and cultivars that will help create a place to live for the friendly insects.
Because we are fans of a good beer, we also plan to grow hops, barley, and wheat, and have our own brewing constantly going.
There will be an orchard both with trees to harvest for building and fruit trees that can weather the climate. (We're thinking cherries and peaches)
Laying hens will be an essential part of the establishment- nothing like eggs for a strong protein.
For meat we are thinking rabbit, since rabbits have a low environmental impact, reproduce rapidly, and are relatively simple to care for.
These are just the beginning of some of our plans. As the project progresses, the hope is to have a cost evaluation, and a meter indicating how close we are to each of the individual goals. Part of the raising of money to make this dream a reality will come from advertising on this website, so please share it with everyone you know.
